Ski clothes as well as snowboard and ski accouterments can be expressed by just a single main constituent - usefullness. The inner layer should be your underclothes and that's your decision. Don't forget - skiing or snowboarding will warm people up and the weather are warm! Dress up for the coldest conditions and purchase a handy haversack where you can place all that clothing when you get too warm. These days, if skiers chance to find outlets that hire ski and board kit, they are more up to date concerning the quality of the stuff than a few years ago. The incontestable criteria are 'the versatility' of the paraphernalia, and not 'prettiness'.

So let's take it that this is a debut headache to a ski shop; what is the best advice? A lot skiing clothes are crafted for the ski slopes, and must be got from a ski and boarding clothing shop. First are skiing and boarding jackets (snow and windproof top layer), ski trousers (or salopettes), ski gloves or mitts, double skinned vacuum ski goggles and sun glasses. All the other stuff, like a fleece (this being the insulating layer), requisite underclothes (third layer), thermal socks, liners to go in your gloves and woolly hats - resort to your most penny-pinching camping store. You will certainly save yourself a fistfull of cash, and if you haven't realised it already, cash is what we are trying to save you here. I reckon that every £10 saved in the shop will give you a good lunch for one in a reasonable restaurant in France. How does that grab you?

These days the word on the street is primarily about plenty of thin layers, which offers comfort, agility in movement, warmth and aeriation. It's a good plan to wear at least in cold weather three layers of clothing, on the outside the thin outer shell - the fancy top in a wonderful technicolor of subdued colors and with a fashionable designer logo, which you will be advertising for nothing. This outer layer is processed from the same cloth that Gortex started to make in the eighties. It allows sweat to go but halts snow from getting in.
